![]() The mystery elements had me holding my breath, and there's just the right amount of suspense.Ībove all, this is a story about friendship and finding yourself again after tragedy the gorgeous writing carries you through grief and to the other side. And Grandpa Ike! Love him!Īt the risk of giving any spoilers, I won't delve too much into the plot, but let's just say that there are plenty of twists and turns. (Okay, except maybe Suzanne.) Coralee in particular is just so, so amazing - really sharp-witted. In fact, it's hard to find a character in this novel who, by the end, you don't want to give a big hug. Once you read the story, you'll know what I'm talking about!)Įthan is such a relatable, empathetic character. (And I probably would've begged my parents for a pet wolf and a pet alligator. It's one of those novels that you just know is going to be on a "classics" list, and is exactly the sort of book I would've treasured as a kid. There is so much heart and love in this book. ![]() What a gorgeous, gorgeous middle grade novel. ![]() The Ethan I Was Before had me completely choking up. ![]() Now, in 2019, The Spanish Princess will pick up with a new generation 25 year years later, set in 1509, when Catherine of Aragon comes to England to marry Henry VIII. The White Princess, which premiered in 2017, is an adaptation of The White Princess and The King's Curse novels and set 20 years on in 1485, as the war winds down. ( The White Queen, The Red Queen, and The Kingmaker's Daughter). The White Queen, which arrived in 2013, was a direct historical drama based on the War of the Roses set in 1464, covering the events written about in Gregory's The Cousins' War trilogy. Even though they loosely follow each other in the chronology, there is enough of a time jump between the series that each has had a completely different cast. One reason none of these series are directly linked season-to-season is that each is based on different Gregory novels and takes place in a different era. ![]() ![]() Now there's a new installment, STARZ's The Spanish Princess, which continues this related set of standalone series. But the most experimental has been The White Queen, followed by The White Princess, linked adaptations of Philippa Gregory's novels. STARZ chose to commit to the idea of lush television adaptations of sprawling fantasy universes, including Outlander and American Gods. The success of Game of Thrones drove several channels to emulate different aspects of Martin's success story, from budget to body count. ![]() 1 BBC One television series The White Queen is a 10-part adaptation of Gregory's novels The White Queen (2009), The Red Queen and The Kingmaker's Daughter (2012), and features Amanda Hale as Margaret Beaufort. ![]() Perhaps one of the most interesting experiments in the current peak TV landscape is currently going on over at STARZ.
